Alpha Phi at the Las Vegas Convention

Five alumni, Marvin McConaghy, Kirby Montgomery, Mike Mann, Wes Wicker, and Toby Roth, and five undergraduates represented Alpha Phi.

• Toby Roth ’90 was elected to Grand Chapter.
• Kirby Montgomery ’75 received the Distinguished Service Award.
• Pete Mackey ’78 was elected secretary, and Wes Wicker ’79 vice president, of Norwich Housing Corporation.

Pete Derzis Honored by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame

Pete Derzis ’75 was named the 2017 Distinguished American Sportsman. The chapter report recognized his sports broadcasting leadership and role in creating postseason events, including the Birmingham Bowl and Camellia Bowl.

Outstanding Fraternity and Student Honors

Alpha Phi received the Outstanding Fraternity Award at the Order of Omega Awards Banquet, recognizing campus involvement, academic performance, and community service. Tyler Portanova, then vice president of health and safety, received the Most Outstanding Sophomore Award.

Walking in Memory of Parker Jordan

Brothers joined the Out of the Darkness Walk in memory of Parker Jordan. The chapter reported nearly $17,000 raised by Theta Chi, contributing to more than $58,000 raised across participating groups for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Marcus Gibson Receives the Colley Award

Marcus Gibson received the Reginald E.F. Colley Award as Theta Chi’s most outstanding undergraduate brother. The chapter reported that he was Alpha Phi’s seventh recipient. Alpha Phi also received the Lewis Award, Randall Award, and Chapter Excellence Award.

Scholarship at the Chapter House

Brothers gathered with Dr. Robert E. Witt following the 2015 Theta Chi Scholarship Dinner. The chapter reported a 3.2 grade point average for the spring semester, ranking fifth among 29 IFC fraternities.

A New Home on University Boulevard

Alpha Phi dedicated its new chapter house with a reception, dinner, and ceremony following the Florida Atlantic game. The chapter estimated more than 500 attendees. Speakers included Judy Bonner, Dick Elder, Michael Mayer, Richard A. Thigpen, and Dale Taylor; alumni bands Instant Karma and Pure & Simple performed afterward.

Service and Leadership at the National Convention

• Marvin McConaghy received the Distinguished Service Award at Theta Chi’s 160th Anniversary Convention, becoming Alpha Phi’s fifth recipient after Harry Lackey ’27, Dale Taylor ’69, Fulton Hamilton ’72, and Wesley Wicker ’79.
• The chapter received the Phillip S. Randall Award for recruitment and reported being named Fraternity of the Year by its Alabama peers.
• Duane Lamb ’76 and Barry Krauss ’79 gave keynote addresses at the convention. Wes Wicker introduced Lamb, and Toby Roth introduced Krauss.

More Honors for Marcus Gibson

The chapter reported that Marcus Gibson was recognized by the National Interfraternity Council as Greek Man of the Year. He also received ODK’s Outstanding Junior of the Year honor in 2014 and the Alabama Interfraternity Council’s Outstanding Greek Man honor in 2015.

Recognizing Dr. Robert E. Witt

In a ceremony at the chapter house, Dr. Robert E. Witt received Theta Chi’s Colonel Carleton K. Butler Award, recognizing a University faculty or staff member’s positive impact on student life. The chapter honored Witt’s lasting support for the Greek community.

Brothers in the Jasons Society

Clayton Williams, Colton Hill, and Zach Stander were welcomed into the Jasons Society. The original chapter photograph also includes members Marcus Gibson, David Harris, and John Anderson.
